Top 10 most significant churches and cathedrals in Kyiv



1. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra -Caves Monastery.

Built by Kiev monks back in 1051, this striking building is the most holy place in the Ukraine. The caves on the property serve as burial grounds for monks.
The Kiev Pechersk Lavra contains numerous architectural monuments, ranging from bell towers to cathedrals to underground cave systems and to strong stone fortification walls. The main attractions of the Lavra include Great Lavra Belltower, the notable feature of the Kiev skyline, and the Dormition Cathedral, destroyed in World War II, and fully reconstructed in recent years. Other churches and cathedrals of the Lavra include: the Refectory Church, the Church of All Saints, the Church of the Saviour at Berestove, the Church of the Exaltation of Cross, the Church of the Trinity, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, the Church of the Conception of St. Anne, and the Church of the Life-Giving Spring. The Lavra also contains many other constructions, including: the St. Nicholas Monastery, the Kiev Theological Academy and Seminary, and the Debosquette Wall.


2. St.Michael's Cathedral





The religious architecture of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery incorporates elements that have evolved from styles prevalent during Byzantine and Baroque periods. The St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral  is the monastery's main church, built in 1108–1113 at the behest of Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych. The cathedral was the largest of three churches of St. Demetrius Monastery.
The original cathedral was demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, but was reconstructed and opened in 1999 following Ukrainian independence in 1991.

3.Saint Sophia Cathedral




Holy Sophia Cathedral is a cathedral temple of Kiev Metropolis  in 1037-1299 and second one after the Church of the Tithes. Today, it is an outstanding architectural monument of Kievan Rus' and a multi-structural complex-museum. The cathedral is one of the city's best known landmarks and the first patrimony on territory of Ukraine to be inscribed on the World Heritage List along with the Kiev Cave Monastery complex.Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower, the House of Metropolitan, and others. In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. One of the reasons for that move was the fact that both "Sofia Kyivska" and Kiev Pechersk Lavra are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Program as one complex, while in Ukraine the two were governed by different government entities.
The complex of the Cathedral is the main component and museum of the National Preserve "Sophia of Kiev" which is the state institution responsible for the preservation of the Cathedral complex as well as four other historic landmarks across the nation.

4. St.Andrew's Church



The Saint Andrew's Church is a major Baroque church located in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The church was constructed in 1747–1754, to a design by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
The Saint Andrew's Church overlooks the historic Podil neighborhood, situated on a steep hill to which the church gave its current name— Andriyivska Hill. It is currently one of four architectural landmarks of Ukraine, which were put down on the List of Mankind Treasures of Five Continents by the world society.

5.St.Volodymyr's  Cathedral


St Volodymyr's Cathedralis a cathedral in the centre of Kiev. It is one of the city's major landmarks and the mother cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchy, one of two major Ukrainian Orthodox Churches.

6. St. Nicholas Cathedral


The St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral is the second Roman Catholic cathedral built in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Today the building is shared between the Roman Catholic Church of Ukraine and the National House of Organ and Chamber Music. Another Catholic church, the St. Alexander Roman Catholic Cathedral, is the oldest Catholic church in the city and is located near the European Square behind the Ukrainian House in Kyiv.

7.Pokrovsky Monastery


Pokrovsky Monastery was founded in January 11, 1889 by the Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna. The monastery was founded many charitable institutions - free clinic, orphanage, clinic and pharmacy, a church school with a dormitory for students. On the territory of the monastery are two-story Cathedrals . Pokrovsky Cathedral, a refectory church of Archangel Michael. In the monastery's hospital - the temple of St. Agapit Caves and the temple - in honor of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Woe."
In 1925 the monastery was closed. Again it was opened in 1942. After the liberation of Kiev from Nazi occupation in the territory of the monastery on its own was organized by the hospital, and in 1945 - 1948 years it housed the infirmary.

8. St.Alexander Cathedral



The cathedral is the oldest Catholic shrine of Kiev. The church was built by the nobility of Kyiv province, fundraising was completed in 1814.
Cathedral of St. Alexander was the only major Catholic place of worship in Kiev until 1909 when  church of St. Nicholas was built.


9.Vydubitsky Monastery


Vydubitsky monastery located in the southern part of Kiev in a scenic area - Vidubichi, where in times of Kievan Rus, according to the Chronicle, was the transport to the left bank of the Dnipro river. The monastery was founded in the 2 nd half of 11 century by Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich as an ancestral monastery. In the years 1070-88 in Vydubitsky monastery was built St Michael's Cathedral. In 1096, the monastery was attacked by Polovtsy. In the years 1199-1200 under the walls of the Cathedral of the Kiev architect P. Miloneg built a system of retaining structures (in 1983 on the facade of St Michael's Cathedral was established Milonegu Peter plaque).
Contemporary Ensemble Vydubitsk monastery has been made in the late 17 - early 18 th century, when Starodub Colonel MA Miklashevskii raised here tile five-domed Cathedral of St. George and the refectory (1686-1701), and D. Hetman Apostol - Bell Tower (1727-33) in the style of the Ukrainian Baroque. 

10. St. Catherine Greek orthodox church(Greek Monastery)


Greek (Catherine) monastery was founded in 1748 by Greek colonists. Housed in Podil near current Kontraktova area. Initially, in this place in the years 1739-1741 was built the stone church in the baroque style.
In the second half of the 18 century on the territory of the monastery were built residential housing and the bell tower (architect I.G. Grigorovich-Barsky), and in 1915 were built new tower in the classical style (designed by architect L. Eisner) and housing (architect F. I. Lidval).
